What does a typical Sunday at Chetwynd Community Church look like?
Come dressed up or come dressed down; the point is to come… and hear the Word of God preached. Join us for corporate worship, prayer and fellowship. The doors open around 9:30am. Tea/ coffee is made for the early comers and attendees filter in between 9:30 and 10:30 depending on their role.
At 10:30 we make our way into the sanctuary where Pastor Aaron will lead us in some hymns accompanied by his wife on the piano. Sometimes we’re blessed with a violin accompaniment as well. Between hymns, male church members will assist (by previous assignment) with providing a scripture reading, making announcements, collecting the offering and distributing sacraments. The exact order of service tends to vary slightly.
Visitors are encouraged to support their home church with their tithes but love offerings are appreciated. Communion is celebrated once a month and is an open table. Juice in little glass cups and plates of some sort of bread are passed around. Our belief is that the style of the sacraments isn’t all that crucial as they are symbolic only. Individuals are welcome to bring their own sacraments if that is their wish.
Aaron will transition from the service to the sermon by addressing any prayer concerns and opening the sermon in prayer. While Aaron is praying, the Sunday School teachers and children will quietly leave the sanctuary and head downstairs. Children are welcome to participate in communion or remain for the sermon at their parent’s discretion. As a father of five, Aaron is very well versed in all things children and welcomes their presence in the sanctuary. In fact, he gets some of his heartiest “amens” from the tiniest of voices.
The basement consists of a small galley kitchen, washroom, tables and chairs. There is an optional speaker coming in from the sanctuary as well as a curtained off play area with a changing table. There are always two adults present for Sunday School who have been appropriately screened (see our church leadership page). Parents/ guardians are, of course, welcome to join the children. If there is a concern with one of the children, a teacher will send an older child to discretely collect his/ her parent. Depending on the weather and if there’s time remaining after cleaning up from the lesson, the children are supervised for free play, either in the basement or outside where there is a small lawn with picnic tables.
Meanwhile, Pastor Aaron preaches for roughly an hour. If you weren’t able to take in all of the sermon, it is recorded and later uploaded to YouTube. After closing the sermon in prayer, Aaron and his wife will lead us in another hymn followed by a closing prayer.
Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the basement after the service as we would love to get to know you. This is also the best time to talk with Pastor Aaron if you have any questions. Refreshments consist of a variety of hot beverages, juice and cookies. A snack will also be provided by one of the families in the church with a focus on providing a healthy option. Individuals with special dietary concerns are welcome to bring their own snack. As conversation winds down, clean up becomes a group effort while we continue to visit and eventually say our goodbyes.
Other services include evening worship and Bible study led by Pastor Aaron every other Sunday at 6:30pm and a men’s only Bible study led by Aaron or one of the elders every Tuesday at 7pm. We welcome you to come and try out our close knit community of Christ followers. Come for the preaching. Come for the odd BBQ or work party. Come as you are and be changed by the Holy Spirit. God bless!
