HISTORY ON CHETWYND CHURCH:
By Cathy Snell
The church building was erected on Lot 18, Concession 6. Armour Township in 1898 by the Methodist Church, but there were services held in the old log school as early as 1885. the first minister that has been recorded was Rev. J. Stonehouse. In 1885 there were 32 members in the Chetwynd Church.
For a short period, the Chetwynd Church was part of the Emsdale Mission charge with Mr. Curran as Minister and then for a short time it was transferred to the Presbyterian denomination.
At the time of the church union in 1925, Chetwynd Church became Chetwynd United Church, at which time Dr. Booth became the minister. In 1951 Mr. Robert Wilson, who was born and raised in Chetwynd, became the minister.
Due to small numbers, the United Church of Canada closed the church in 1965. At this time the community purchased the church and opened it as Chetwynd Community Church under the leadership of Mr. Sam Kelsall who continued until 1968 when he moved to North Bay. Later that summer, Rev. Fred Wicks of South River became the pastor until ill health forced him to leave in June 1973. Later that year, Mr. Vito Booth preached until he moved to Eganville, Ontario in November 1976.
From 1976 to 1983, the church work continued under the leadership of Mr. Ken Stickland who was taken to be with the Lord as the result of an automobile accident.
In December 1984, Mr. Wayne Bacon became the pastor of Chetwynd Community Church and led the church until he went to be with the Lord in 2007.
In 2008, the church became affiliated with Village Missions of Canada, who sent Doug Campbell from Nova Scotia to become the new pastor. Doug and Glenda were with the church for a year and a half, before heading back to Nova Scotia.
After Doug and Glenda left, the church held weekly worship services with the help of many local pastors and speakers. The entire congregation pulled together to keep the church going.
After a year and a half, a young man by the name of Aaron Oliveira became the pastor at Chetwynd Community Church. He is the pastor to this day.
The church is non-denominational, evangelical church.
We support our local Food Bank in a number of ways: we collect non-perishable food items, monetary donations and also have a “hat/mitten” tree in November/early December, where we collect these items and donate them to the Food Bank for distribution.
We reach out to local families in need, when there is a fire, etc.,
We are also involved with “Operation Christmas Child”, where we collect items for the shoe boxes for children around the world. We support 2 World Vision Children on a monthly basis. We also support a number of missionaries too.
The Church Board current members are:
Pastor Aaron Oliveira, Penny Boyes (Secretary), Ralph Snell (Treasurer), Cam Watt (Trustee), Brad Waddell (Trustee), Brandon Boyes (Trustee) and Cathy Snell (Junior Church)
Addendum: As the food bank no longer looks after the hat & mittens program, they are now donated directly to the local school.
